ACS Foundation Board


The ACS Foundation is administered by its Trustees, who have been empowered to make decisions relating to the allocation of funding and the strategic direction of the organisation:

John Debrincat

John Debrincat, Chairman ACS Foundation

John is the founder, Managing Director and CEO of eCorner Pty Ltd; he is also the Managing Director of In House Consulting Pty Ltd.

John Debrincat has over 32 years of experience in business in the Asia Pacific. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society, a member of the Company Directors Association, a member of the Australian Institute of Management and an Associate Member of Australian Human Resource Institute.

John is also an Honorary Life Governor and board member of Sydney University Foundation for Information Technologies.

He is a Patron of the Lord Baden-Powell Society. John is a supporter and sponsor of the National Heart Foundation and World Vision.He is a Founding Director and board member of the International Environmental Weed Foundation. It is a non-profit body with a mission of expanding the knowledge of how to control non-indigenous plants and weed plants around the world.

Also he is a part owner and director of Gartelmann Hunter Valley Wines. This is one of the largest vineyards in the Lovedale area of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales in Australia. You can visit www.gartelmann.com.au for more information.

   
Philip Argy Philip Argy, Vice Chairman ACS Foundation

A former Partner in the Sydney office of leading international law firm, Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Philip Argy, Vice Chairman, specialises in intellectual property, science and high technology law and trade practices (antitrust and fair trading). He is President of the ACS and chairs its Economic, Legal and Social Implications Committee, as well as representing the Society in its submissions to various Government Committee hearings on privacy, online content regulation, cybercrime and more.

He is a past president and founding member of the NSW Society for Computers and the Law, Past Chairman of the Information Technology subcommittee of the Law Council of Australia, a member of International Bar Association Committees "L", "R" & "S" and the Australian Corporate Lawyers' Association. He also sat on the Federal Attorney-General's Electronic Commerce Expert Group.

   
Karim Barbara Karim Barbara

KarimBarbara, Prinicipal of Barbara & Co. Consulting Pty Ltd focuses on the application of telecommunication and Information technologies to the Health and Aged Care market.

As Industry Director, Health & Aged Care he drove, over the last 5 years, Telstra Enterprise & Government’s vision, strategy, market creation initiatives and solution development for the Health and Aged Care segment.

Leveraging his previous experience as Senior Adviser to two federal senior cabinet ministers, Karim also advised Telstra on increasing the penetration of State and Federal Government markets.

His previous market development responsibilities within Telstra’s Research Laboratories and his ongoing interaction with research institutions provided him with insight into the impact of emerging and future technologies on Government and Industry sectors.

Karim holds an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), a Bachelor of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Theology from the Lateran University in Rome.

His varied professional experience has covered areas as diverse as strategic industry marketing, political lobbying, management consulting, international welfare and journalism, including war corresponding in Beirut.

   
   

Jim Ellis OAM

Jim Ellis has worked in the IT industry for nearly 40 years. In 1997 he established Westinfo Services as the Gartner distributor for Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and as the WA and NT Channel Partner for the Thomson NETg range of on-line training products. Jim is owner and Managing Director of Westinfo Services. Gartner assumed direct control of activities in WA and NT in March 2006 in a planned transition, leaving Westinfo Services to concentrate on the Thomson NETg training activities.

Jim is a past Chairman of the WA Branch of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), and a Fellow and Honorary Life Member of the Society. He is also a Member of the British Computer Society, a Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council (UK), a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. He is also on the WA Branch Executive of the AIIA (Australian Information Industries Association). Jim conceived the WA IT & Telecommunications Awards (WAITTA) and was Chairman from its inception in 1991 until stepping down in March 2003 to take on the role of inaugural Chairman of the WA Chapter of the ACS Foundation.

Jim was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Murdoch University, Perth in June 2006. Jim is also a holder of the Order of Australia Medal.

   
Penny Coulter

Penny Coulter has 25+ years experience in IT recruitment covering contract, permanent recruitment and executive search, and an unparalleled network of contacts across the industry.  In 2007, Penny together with her business partner created an IT recruitment services company, Taylor Coulter. 

In 2002, Penny Coulter joined the Board of ITCRA (Information Technology Contracting Recruitment Association). In March 2004, Penny was appointed Vice President of ITCRA and in August 2004, elected President, a position she held for 4 years until August 2008.  Penny remains a Board member and an active member of ITRA Committees. 

In 2005, Penny became a member of an ICT Advisory Group assisting the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA) in preparation of an ICT Participation Summit held September 2005.  In 2006, she participated as an Industry Panel Expert (“Is ICT a Career?”) at the National ICT Skills Summit, hosted by Queensland Government and has presented “A Career in ICT, Now and the Future” to the ACS Young IT and to AIIA/FITT members.

Penny continues to play an active role with Industry and Government in conjunction with the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).  She is a member of the Industry Leadership Group acting as Chair for the National ICT Careers Week under the theme “Start Here, Go Anywhere” held annually for one week at the end of July.  The purpose is to showcase the extensive and rewarding study and career opportunities currently available in ICT for young people.

   
John Price

John Price is a 30 year veteran of the ICT industry and a long time contributor to industry growth through his involvement with the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA). When he stood down from the AIIA Board in late 2007 John was the longest serving Board member (15 years) including three years as Chairman. He also spent 20 years on the NSW Branch Committee. John remains a mentor on the AIIA MGSM entrepreneur development program. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer society (ACS) and Australian Institute of Directors (AICD) and current Board Member of the ACS Foundation.

John has a passion for the development of the ICT industry in particular Education and Training .He has represented AIIA on a wide number of industry forums including the formation chair role of the IT&T Industry Training Advisory Board (IT&T ITAB), He was a Director of the IT Skills Hub, member of NSW Government IIAC and a Vice President of ASOCIO. John Chaired the Management stream of SEARCC when last held in Australia.

John had a career building HR Businesses in the IT sector including The Focus Group, JSP Associates and SI Resources. Following the development and sale of each business he worked under contract to US multinationals, Australian public companies and Vice President ANZ for a global services company head quartered in India.

John is currently the NSW Chapter Chairperson for the NSW ACS Foundation.

He Chaired an IT Incubator which invested in growing IT companies and understands the challenges emerging product and services companies face in their expansion and partnering. Today John operates as an Executive Coach and Mentor.

   
John Ridge AM, Executive Director

John Ridge was appointed Executive Director in January 2005.

John Ridge was the inaugural Chairman of the Foundation and was president of the ACS in 2000 and 2001. He worked tirelessly to ensure the ACS Foundation was established and has since played a substantial role in the successful development of the Foundation.

John was recognised for his contribution to IT by his being awarded with an Order for Australia award.

Since joining the ACS in the 1970s, John has served in varying capacities, initially as an Executive Committee Member of the NSW Branch, then serving as NSW Branch Chair, National Vice-President prior to his election as President for 2000-1 and more recently as National Marketing Director.

   
Dennis Furini

Dennis Furini is Chief Executive of the ACS, having joined the Society in September 1999 after 10 years with Sydney Water where he earned a reputation for strong leadership, effective management, quality focus, communications and customer skills.

He has over 35 years experience in the IT industry in a career that has encompassed a diverse range of positions and working environments.

Dennis began his professional life with Philips, where he spent 26 years in various national and international positions, including National Manager Information Systems and Automation. During the 1980s, he also established and managed a successful marketing and professional services business. He is a Fellow of the ACS.
