The Big Day In - Sunshine Coast - Technology Grows in Queensland

On March 11, 2026, the Sunshine Coast hosted an exciting speaker program, showcasing a variety of experts from the tech industry and beyond. The event was a high school focused hub of knowledge and inspiration, designed for students and teachers alike.

Welcoming Remarks

The day kicked off at 9:10 AM with an official welcome from Mayor Rosanna Natoli of the Sunshine Coast Council, along with Jonathan Nalder, ICT GISP Program Manager at the Australian Computer Society. Their opening remarks set the tone for a day filled with learning and exploration.

Engaging Presentations

The first keynote speaker, Stephen Bennett, Group Chief Information Security Officer at Domino's Pizza, delved into the critical role of cybersecurity in the digital landscape. His session, titled “A Slice of Cybersecurity ... Protecting the Pizza Sauce?” promised to demystify cybersecurity and share his personal journey in the tech world. Following that, Dr. Bonnie Quigley from the Thompson Institute presented “Big Tech, Tiny Bacteria,” illustrating how advanced technology was applied in biological research. This session highlighted the intersection of technology and biology, showcasing tools that enhanced understanding of the microscopic world.



Career Opportunities in Tech

Kimberly Valenny, Front End Developer at Deloitte, discussed “Careers & Opportunities in the Tech Industry,” emphasizing digital accessibility and the importance of inclusive design. Tony Dunn and Katie Steele from Sunshine Coast Council explored how technology enhanced local government operations in their session, “Rates, Roads, Rubbish & Robots.” This talk demonstrated the practical applications of data analytics and automation in improving community services.

Lunch and Networking

Students had the chance to network over lunch while learning about opportunities with the Australian Signals Directorate and insights into aviation careers from Cran Middlecoat, known as “That Pilot Guy.”



Concluding Remarks

 The event wrapped up with a prize draw and closing remarks, leaving participants inspired and informed about the future of technology and career possibilities. It was a missed opportunity for those who did not engage with industry leaders and explore their potential in the tech landscape!
